Hoot Hoot

The changing colors of the leaves, shorter days, the addition of coats to our sweaters, Halloween just around the corner, squirrels frantically gathering and burying food - it all reminds me of the no. 2 bird on my Top 5 Bird List: The Owl

Owls, being solitary and nocturnal birds of pray, are often used metaphorically to represent death and misfortune. Equally, their poise and elegance have also made them a symbol of wisdom (the owl is used as the mascot for Mensa)

The serrated edges of their wings make for a completely silent flight, one of the main reasons why I find them so charming... that and the creepy head turning. Most of us will never get to see and appreciate an owl’s silent graceful beauty. Sad really... now I’m ready to make Owl’s favorite: Tear-Water Tea!

“I love to hear their wailing, their doleful responses, trilled along the woodside; as if it were the dark and tearful side of music, the regrets and sighs that would fain be sung” Henry David Thoreau’s reference to owls in Walden (1854)

1 Week Vacation

Today is a Friday that actually feels like one! Tomorrow is the beginning of my 1 Week Vacation. I promise to not waste it and be as productive as I can (and make sure to relax a little too). I’m terribly excited right now...

The Hour & The Mirror

I just finished reading* 26 newspapers in 8 hours. Here is what I learned:

- George Bush ended his final G8 summit meeting by saying: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter" ...Was he trying to be funny? What a jackass!

- Rafael Katigbak writes the funniest, coolest, bestest column in the world: Riff Raff.

- The European Organization for Nuclear Research collected $8 billion from European and North American countries to build a particle accelerator. With it, scientists hope to discover the universe's origin by answering the following question: does matter have mass? ...I have a question: how is this even justified? Forget social programs, world hunger, clean water, eliminating developing country debt; instead, let's use $8 billion to answer vague scientific questions that will probably lead to nothing.

- China's one child policy created a generation of only children that numbers 90 million.

- The Bell Beavers Frank & Gordon have officially retired.

- To cut costs, the airline industry has ordered pilots to fly without fuel reserves needed in the event of unforeseen delays (because it takes extra fuel to carry that extra fuel) ...the cost of a crash can't be less than the cost of fuel... can it?

- 2 in 5 Canadians are facing a diagnosis of cancer in their lifetime.

- Erotomania: scientific word for sexual addiction.

- The federal conservative government intends to cut funding to the arts by $45 million between now and 2010.

- The universe is between 13 & 14 billion years old.

- 57 million vehicles cross the Champlain bridge every year resulting in severe damage to the supporting grinders. ...Officially scared to cross the bridge now!

- The truth will set you free; but first, it will piss you off!

- I let 26 newspapers pile up in my room... A sign that I have been pretty lazy lately. I really need to get my shit together and start using that stationary I bought that is supposed to help me plan my days in increments on 30 minutes...

* I totally skipped the boring articles

my new motto

Biking home from work today, I felt really happy. Today is my Friday which implies two full days to do whatever I want. Having a couple of days, absolutely free of any stress, is definitely a luxury and it feels pretty amazing.

I was also giggling at what just happened on the bus: the bus driver stopped the bus, got up, and started yelling at some rowdy kids. It was embarrassingly funny! Mostly, I’m just happy because I got to enjoy the sun today with someone really great. Maybe I have been a little negative lately... I sometimes forget how really lucky I am and how lovely something as simple as a bike ride home can be.
