To Daydream

I know it's been a long time since I've posted something... With Sybs helping James settle into his new apartment in NY and Benny visiting home in TO, I've been left to my devices. I've been reading a lot lately, sleeping well, and spending a lot of time daydreaming. Daydreaming for me is a way to relax and escape from my uninspiring job. I often dream of a land by the ocean with a rocky beach, an open space, wild horses running free, and how nice it would be to one day visit.

Research at the University of BC found that the brain sorts out "important problems in our lives" when our mind wanders into a daydream...

I Always Wondered...

I always wondered what scallops look like in their natural state. I've seen them on cooking shows, presented something like this:

Scallops are from the same family as the oyster but are more developed because they have eyes and are active swimmers (they swim by opening and closing their shell). They come out of the ocean looking like this:

Restaurants only serve the middle part (the adductor muscle) and usually discard the surrounding tissue (the roe).

Ocean Wise

One of my favorite shows is At the Table With, a Food Network series that showcases the lives of different chefs. Last week, the show was centered around Robert Clark, the executive chef at C restaurant in Vancouver. He is the founder of Ocean Wise, a NPO that promotes sustainable harvesting of seafood. His is a seafood restaurant that doesn't serve the typical Salmons, Tunas or Swordfishes, and his dishes are in high demand.

Being vegetarian, I often get asked if I eat fish. For me, there was never a doubt that fish and all marine life deserve to live a long peaceful life. Not eating fish also means taking a stand against modern fishing practices that are currently destroying aquatic habitats and depleting our ocean's of endangered marine species. But if you are going to eat fish or seafood, it's important to think twice about how the food you are eating was harvested.

With an estimated 90% of all large, predatory fish already gone from our world’s oceans since industrialized fishing began; we are now fishing the last 10% of species such as tunas, swordfish, and sharks. Quite simply our marine species can not reproduce fast enough to keep up with the hunt. link

Things I need/want to do:

Stop eating before bed.

Look for a better job so I can

my current one.

Exercise more.

Adopt a pet, preferably Jake.

Stretch.

Eat less chocolate and more fruits/veggies.

Save more for a rainy day.

Spend more time with my family, just because I love them so much!

Last Meals

Last Meals by Jonathon Kambouris. These pictures are creepy yet fascinating at the same time. I often ask the question: what would your last meal be? Usually the answer is a simple home cooked meal, something mom used to make. In reality, when faced with the thought of dying, I would think that appetite and hope go hand in hand- both are lost.

(Thanks Ben!)

I Wonder

On the way home from work last night, I bumped into an old friend on the bus. I've known her my whole life: went to the same schools, grew up in the same neighborhood, share the same friends. She's been working as a design engineer for uranium storage (!?) and just recently got promoted within her company which entails a transfer to another province. So in 2 days she'll be gone, just like almost all my friends from the South Shore. It seems like everyone is growing up and moving on, and I wonder when I'll be ready to do the same.

Family Portrait

Ever since I can remember, my mom has been bugging us to all get together for a family portrait. The idea was a ridiculous one as teenagers, and a cheesy one as adults. But for my mom's 60th birthday (back in March) we wanted to make her happy and knew what to get her: a gift certificate at a photo studio. We put if off, then my dad got his heart attack. So last Sunday, we all got together to celebrate my sisters' 30 birthday and to get our picture taken. Here are the final results:

I'm glad we did this. With Vany living in Ottawa and Sybs moving to Toronto in a couple of weeks, who knows when we will all be together like this again.

Goodnight!

I'm much happier today, mainly because my work week is over. Now I'm ready for a much anticipated long peaceful sleep. Goodnight!
