Hoot Hoot

The changing colors of the leaves, shorter days, the addition of coats to our sweaters, Halloween just around the corner, squirrels frantically gathering and burying food - it all reminds me of the no. 2 bird on my Top 5 Bird List: The Owl

Owls, being solitary and nocturnal birds of pray, are often used metaphorically to represent death and misfortune. Equally, their poise and elegance have also made them a symbol of wisdom (the owl is used as the mascot for Mensa)

The serrated edges of their wings make for a completely silent flight, one of the main reasons why I find them so charming... that and the creepy head turning. Most of us will never get to see and appreciate an owl’s silent graceful beauty. Sad really... now I’m ready to make Owl’s favorite: Tear-Water Tea!

“I love to hear their wailing, their doleful responses, trilled along the woodside; as if it were the dark and tearful side of music, the regrets and sighs that would fain be sung” Henry David Thoreau’s reference to owls in Walden (1854)
