You know what?
A comment like " I would respect Bertrandt if only he hadn't..." is so fucking ignorant it boggles the mind.
It was an accident, pure and simple, one which will live with him forever and ever.
Put the incident on another foot.
Him and Marie are fixing dinner and they forgot the cream for the the civit or whatever.
Him OR her says "don't worry, I'll go get it" and jumps on their bike.
Going down the road, a six ( 6) year old child jumps in front of the bike and in the childs confusion, the child get's hit by a truck and dies a horrible death.
Maybe whoever( man OR woman) was driving the bike while they were fixing a dinner together on a rare night off the movie set the movie set had more then a few glasses of wine, maybe something else.
The point being is, how long before you give that person their live back again, huh?
The other one you can relieve the movies, the tv, the whatever and yes, it was horrible beyond a doubt and I assure you no feel it more then my friend, OK
Sincerely,
A man who knows him

How can you compare a child running into the street and causing an accident, to a grown man beating his girlfriend into a coma? Call me ignorant, but I don't see how these two scenarios are related...

"In 2003, following an argument related to infidelity, Cantat repeatedly assaulted his girlfriend Marie Trintignant in a hotel room in Vilnius, Lithuania. She died several days later in hospital in a deep coma, and a post-mortem examination showed she had suffered multiple head injuries. At his 2004 trial, prosecutors said he had hit her 19 times, causing irreversible brain damage, whereas Cantat admitted hitting Trintignant four times, but told the court her death was a tragic accident. He was said to have flown into a jealous rage after she received an affectionate text message from her former husband..."
